so the pickaxe can only be unlocked by one single method in the entire game. it’s not through a boss fight or hidden behind a locked door or purchased from a merchant.

in brightstone cove tseldora, at the first bonfire, there is a group of pigs. they just act like normal pig enemies. there is no indication that they are different in any way and none of their behaviour is abnormal.

at the end of brightstone cove tseldora, close to the entrance to the boss room, is a chapel filled with spiders where the floor is broken in certain places. to get there from the beginning, you must pass several traps and enemies, a miniboss fight against the prowling magus and congregation, several dangerous drops, and a sinkhole.

to unlock the pickaxe, you must do all that, but lead one of the pigs the entire way down. all the way past everything, to that chapel at the end of the level, where it will start digging in the dirt poking through the broken floor, and unearth the pickaxe. the pig must make it to the end of the level without losing aggro on you or dying. this is the only way in the entire game to unlock the pickaxe, which is a joke weapon that’s not worth using even if it were easily accessible, and the game gives you no indication that this is something you can or should do
